Toptree Wood

The planting of Toptree Wood began on 30 October 1998 and was completed on February 14 2007.  The woodland is a mixture of oak, ash, birch, field maple, rowan, cherry, dogwood and hawthorn.  Fast growing larch, planted to provide shelter for the other species, will be thinned out as the broadleaved trees become established.  Toptree Wood has been created in the heart of the country as part of the National Forest scheme. Managed by the Woodland Trust, the wood will mature to become a focal point in the surrounding countryside, a distinct and visible monument to the efforts of this generation in the years to come.

The best part of the Toptree Initiative is that you can actually go and see the trees growing, with details on how to find Toptree Wood below:

From Junction 11 on the M42, head towards Burton upon Trent along the A444.  Past the village of Overseal, follow the signs for Linton.  Cars may be parked here.  Download the map to see the site of the Wood and also the lanes and footpaths for access.

The Woodland Trust

Since the 1930's the UK has lost over 50% of its ancient woodland, our rarest and most precious habitat, and is one of the least wooded countries in Europe.

The Trust, started in 1972, now protects and cares for more than 1,100 woods across the UK and also creates new woodland, currently planting approximately a million trees a year for people and wildlife.  It is now the UK's leading woodland conservation charity with over 300,000 members and supporters.  Trees and forests are crucial to life on our planet as they generate oxygen, play host to a spectacular variety of wildlife and offer us tranquil places to visit and refresh our souls.
